Carving Out What’s Best For You

There are those in the structured settlement world who are familiar with the terms, horizontal carve-out and vertical carve-out. The average structured settlement holder isn’t one of them. In fact, most people wouldn’t even associate such terms with their structured settlement. But, f you’ve received a structured settlement from a lottery winning, and you’re planning to sell part or all of it, you’ll soon find out what these two terms mean.

In the legal arena, a horizontal carve-out means that you’re only going to sell a portion of your structured settlement to a third party. A vertical carve-out means you’re going to sell the whole kit and caboodle. Where these two terms originated from, one can only speculate. In any event, these are the legal terms used in a court of law when you sell your structured settlement that resulted from a lottery winning.
